The Africa Award for Research Excellence in Space Science is given annually to an early career scientist from the African continent in recognition of “completing significant work that shows the focus and promise of making outstanding contributions to research in space science.”

Established in 2015 by the generosity of Sunanda Basu, these awards will help to advance AGU’s strategic mission by supporting diversity in the scientific community and acknowledging excellence in research in space, oceans and Earth sciences and providing opportunities for international collaboration and support.

AWARD INCLUDES:

  • Engraved crystal award
  • $1,000 monetary prize 
  • Three-year membership to the AGU 
  • Invitation to present a paper at the AGU Fall Meeting in an appropriate session during the award presentation year 
  • Recognition at the AGU Fall Meeting during the award presentation year
  • Two complimentary tickets to the Honors Banquet at the AGU Fall Meeting during the award presentation year 
  • Award winners will be eligible for travel support and meeting registration through the Lloyd V. Berkner Travel Fellowship Fund to attend the AGU Fall Meeting  during the award presentation year.
  • Recognition in Eos

  • Successful candidates should show the talent and drive necessary to excel in long careers in space science and their applications for the benefits to society.

Nomination Process & Requirements


Nomination Eligibility:

Nominees:

  • Active AGU membership is not required
  • Nominee must be a citizen or permanent resident of a country on the African continent.
  • Nominee must be within 10 years of having received a PhD from an African institution. Exceptions to the 10 year requirement due to unusual circumstances can be considered on a case basis by the current Africa Award (Space Science) Committee.
  • Compliance with AGU Conflict of Interest Policy.

Nominators:

  • Active AGU membership is required.
  • Compliance with AGU Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Duplicate nominations for one individual will not be accepted. However, one co-nominator is permitted (but not required) per nomination.

Nomination Requirements:

Two or more nomination packages for a single candidate will not be considered. If separate packages will be received, the nominators will be asked to combine them.

Your nomination package should contain the following files, which should be no more than two (2) pages in length per document:

  1. Nomination letter with one-sentence citation. Letterhead stationary is preferred, and should include the nominator’s name, title, institution and contact information. The citation should appear at either the beginning or end of the nomination letter and be no more than 150 characters.
  2. Nominee’s curriculum vitae (CV). Please include all of following information for the candidate: name; mailing and email address; history of employment; degrees; research experience; honors; memberships, and service to the community through committee work, advisory boards, etc.
  3. Nominee’s selected bibliography. The list should encompass the candidate’s overall research and scientific contribution that best support their nomination for the Africa Award for Research Excellence in Space Science.
  4. 3 letters of support (total does not include nomination letter). Letterhead stationary is preferred. Supporter’s name, title, institution, and contact information are required.

Nominations for the Africa Award (Space Science) must be submitted through the online submission system.

Nomination packages submitted online must be complete at the time of submission. Please note that only complete packages will be forwarded to the Africa Award (Space Science) Committee for review.
